Meaningful trash

The video i have uploaded came straight from a family guy episode which i thought was relevant to the topic at hand.

Family guy did a parody on the American film 'American Beauty'.

Conspicuous Waste
As you can watch from the video, it shows in a really funny way how rubbish may seem more deep and meaningful to others.
You can see 2 sides to this short clip

1) from Peters eyes.
2) From gods eyes.

What things do you HAVE TO throw away?

Naturally an everyday household rubbish bin will have these items :

  • Bottles/cans.
  • Tissue paper (kleenex).
  • Toilet paper (note that these are 2 different kinds of tissues).
  • Food (those bits of unfinished meals).
  • wrappers. (be it food wrappers or candy wrappers there will always be at least one wrapper.)

Could you have avoided purchasing any of these in the first place?

To answer this question....i would say it would be difficult to avoid.....tissue paper is something you use everyday...unless you've installed a hose in your toilet to wash up after yourself.

An idea: To rid the world of toilet paper production (less trees will be cut down for toilet paper)...bidets should be installed in all bathrooms around the world!

With kleenex...it seems to me that people should probably carry their own handkerchief and maybe a bottle of those anti bacterial sprays or lotions :)

no matter how many solutions to what problems people come up with

at the end of the day.....

More Wasteful Waste

So i had the greatest experience waiting in line last night (outdoors) in Leicester Square for 4 hours! I have a point to this entry....I promise.I waited with friends and other eager gamers for the new expansion of WoW. (World of Warcraft)

Once i got in the building i was luck enough to win myself a new mousepad >>>

Aint it a beaut? This mouespad features the new boss 'Deathwing'...rawr~

below are the pictures i took of the packaging it came in...

It does seem like a waste to throw these away in the bin...I mean i could collect it?...but for what purpose??

Its just the Warcraft logo that catches my eyes and makes it impossible to discard :"(
As you can see its just cardboard and plastic....

My heart tells me to keep it coz thats me...but all in all ...it has no use to me....its been binned.

Waste thats just.....well...wasteful :(

I would call this Hoarding.

Baz's dictionary defines Hoarding as: 'the collection of nonsensical items'.

As i said in one of the discussion boards...in my teenage years I collected numerous things after its purpose is used up. I just felt like it could be of use to me somehow in the future.....its like...theres more to junk than you know.

As a teenage girl back then i collected things such as:

(Mind you this is all from memory..i unfortunately done have any pictures of my old room.)

  • My moms makeup....expired stuff here ppl :P
  • Bottle caps (Thought make it into a cool necklace?)
  • Out of style tops (for example some sequined mess...im sure that style will come back)...and yes my closet was filled with clothes i never wore... A WASTE OF SPACE.
  • a mountain of bags...be its sports bags, backpacks or handbags..there was just a pile of bags in one corner of my room...(And only 2 or 3 bags altogether were ever used).
  • Candle wax....(i had a 'scented candle phase')...thought to myself that candle shavings would be useful someday....melt it into something cool maybe?
This was well about 6 to 7 y
ears ago...its hard to remember what else i had... but it was a wreck in my room. But somehow i have this ability to tidy things up.... instead of cleaning my mess of a room. So i never got told of my the parents ;D
So 7 years later...you could say i'm cured from the 'hoarding virus'....however....i still do sometimes collect things i probably don't need..

Right now i've got a good collection of newspapers going on under my bed....i tucked it away in a huge container though...lets take a quick look see>>>

Don't ask me why. It just seems.....wasteful :(

They say people can grow of out of bad habits. I think i might have just suppressed mine

Garbage collection in the area.

I took the time to visit the City of Westminster website where it has many useful information about the rubbish collection in central london areas. However the topic is only covered in one page (the introductory page). and it didn't really seem clear to me....it somehow went on about ASBO activities :P
Nevertheless the website produced links to some of their useful pages such as 'Recycling', 'Commercial Waste', and 'waste collection' in specific areas of central London.

The recycling page came up with very specific details about recycling, such as; how to do it, with what (tools used)...etc.

Wast Collection in Norfolk Square:
Like every other areas in London garbage is collected on certain days ant time.....thats what i think of course....wait...YES it is. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In the early hours of the day....that is if you think 7.30-9.30 is early.
Apparently there is only one day in the week does the garbage get collected for recycling which is every Monday.

Although i think your rubbish does get recycled of you put in in the specific 'recycling bag'. If not its just regular ol' garbage.

City of Westminster:
"Keeping a 24hr city clean is a 24hr job. The Clean Streets waste collection, street cleansing and recycling contract is our strategy to do just that."

Do you remember the time...

Hows this for childhood memories:

"EARTH!"
"FIRE!"
"WIND!"
"WATER!"
"HEART!"

"Go Planet!"

"By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!"

Captain Planet, he's our hero

Gonna take pollution down to zero

He's our powers magnified
And he's fighting on the planet's side

Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero

Gonna help him put asunder
Bad guys who like to loot and plunder

"You'll pay for this Captain Planet!"

We're the Planeteers
You can be one too
'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do!

Looting and polluting is not the way
Hear what Captain Planet has to say!

"The Power is Yours!"

The Power is ours.

We take controls of our own actions. So if we want to save the earth for future generations we gotta "Wake up an pay attention~". Get up off our 'advantage taking bums' and do something about it.

I guess you can say back in the days Captain Planet was the ambasador for the children for a greener world

I guess back then it was just so easy to say things and not really make an effort. This was the only show that educated me about saving the earth back when i was a child. I didn't really learn about this stuff until i got a lil older.

I also don't recall remembering people actually doing anything to clean up the environment. At the time. I always just heard people spewing out words about how the "world is a living thing!"..."Heal the world"..."Don't pollute"....yadda yadda.

Im glad we are all more pro active about this

Times a changing.

A tip from Captain Planet:

If you spill liquid don't use a paper towel.

A towel or a sponge will do the job.

A short entry

Im just an international student living on Norfolk Square as you can see. Since I' m still new here in the country i dont really know how garbage is properly being disposed of after its been collected by the 'Westminster garbage trucks'.

This is an image i took from the outside of my private student hostel in norfolk square. Surprisingly there were fewer garbage bags that night. Normally it usually piles up. Im not really sure about the significance for the coloured bags.

The above image are bagged leaves. Im sure the 'City of Westminster garbage' collects these as well.

These were the only other bins I could find around my area (paddington) that seemed to collect specific items (they collect newspapers )....for recycling I'm sure. The rest of the bins were the 'black bins' that are allocated in each corner. of the area.
Some people are actually so lazy they sometimes throw everyday rubbish in them.....yes....I seen those McDonald bags and cups sticking out of them from time to time.

It makes you wonder though. What about other material such as plastics? metal? bio degradables..non biodegradables?? Dont they get their own little disposal units as well?

An introductory entry

This blog is created for my 4th Module in the University of Greenwich on 'Cultures of Consumption'.

Hopefully this blog will turn out successfully because this blog will be my portfolio on the 'War on Waste' issue.

I will be posting up images, entries, a video maybe about my experience or experiences on waste. Anything that relates to the topic will be posted up here.
